While washing your hair may seem like a trivial act that we've been doing for decades, it's nonetheless essential to wash your hair properly to avoid damaging it in the long run, while respecting your sensitive scalp. I met Anaïs Guez, a holistic hair beauty specialist, who shares her ritual for gently washing your hair. Let's take stock together!
Anaïs recommends shampooing ideally twice a week, spacing out washes as much as possible.
1. Before shampooing: gently detangle your hair
We start at the bottom and remember to secure the hair by holding the lock of hair and brushing or combing the part underneath. Then we go back up. Do not detangle your hair from the top of the head to the ends, you risk pulling too much on the hair and breaking it!
Do it even upside down to bring better density to the hair and tone the scalp.
2. Choose the right shampoo
- Choose a very gentle, non-stripping shampoo.
- Be careful with commercial shampoos that can be very aggressive. When you use a shampoo that is very stripping, you remove the sebum from your scalp. This sebum is essential to your hair's well-being because it will coat your hair. The more you strip your scalp, the more you will dry it out.
- This is also why I created my own Veriere solid shampoos designed for sensitive scalps!
3. Apply your shampoo gently
- Wet your hair sufficiently. First, use warm water to open the scales.
-
Put a little shampoo in the palm of your hand and start at the nape of your neck, then do the same starting from the top of your head: use your fingertips to spread the shampoo on your scalp while massaging to stimulate your scalp. Don't hesitate to read this article to find out why and how to stimulate your scalp.
-
No need to soap the lengths
4. Rinse your shampoo
-
Rinse the scalp and lengths with lukewarm then cold water, which will close the hair scales and make the hair shiny. Cold water will also invigorate and stimulate blood circulation.
-
Anaïs' tip: rice water. An eco-friendly and natural rinse water, full of benefits for the hair. In a saucepan, put raw rice (unwashed) and cover with water. Then, pass everything through a strainer, making sure to collect the water obtained because it contains all the rice proteins that will give you a soft and shiny mane! Put the water obtained in a pitcher and head under the shower. After shampooing, rinse directly with this water.
-
Apple cider vinegar diluted in water can also be used to make your hair shine, but be careful, it also strips the scalp. Sensitive scalps should refrain.
5. Dry gently
- After showering, treat your hair gently. Avoid twisting or pulling on your hair, as it is more sensitive when wet.
- Use a microfiber towel to gently blot away excess water.
- Once the hair is almost dry, gently detangle it following the advice in step 1 above. If necessary, you can use a serum or cream to facilitate the process.
- If you use a hair dryer, don't forget to apply a heat protectant to keep them healthy.
A big thank you to Anaïs for her easy-to-implement ritual that will change your hair for sure. It takes about 21 days to see the first results on your dream mane, so start now ;) And if you want Anaïs to take care of your hair, don't hesitate to visit her at her Holistic Room studio in Paris.
